The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), as Greece’s leading technological university and one of the country’s most historic higher education institutions, formulates its Strategic Plan with the aim of maintaining and strengthening its position as an internationally recognised university in the fields of engineering and technology. The Strategic Plan is founded on the inseparable integration of education, research, and innovation and seeks to continuously enhance the University’s contribution to scientific advancement, technological development, and societal well-being.
NTUA’s development strategy is shaped within a highly dynamic and competitive international higher education and research environment, characterised by increased mobility of students and researchers, expanding international collaboration, rapid technological advancement, and major global challenges related to climate change, digital transformation, and sustainable development. At the same time, the national higher education landscape is evolving dynamically, intensifying competition among universities and making the continuous enhancement of the quality of education and research increasingly essential.

Within this context, NTUA seeks to further strengthen its international presence and develop strategic partnerships with leading universities, research centres, and international organisations. The internationalisation of studies, participation in international scientific networks, and the development of collaborative research initiatives constitute key priorities for enhancing the University’s international visibility and attracting high-calibre students and researchers. A central pillar of the University’s strategy is the strengthening of research excellence and the further integration of research into the educational process. NTUA seeks to promote interdisciplinary research, increase the international impact of its scientific output, and harness the knowledge generated within its laboratories and research teams for the benefit of society and the economy. At the same time, particular emphasis is placed on developing a comprehensive innovation ecosystem around the University. By strengthening knowledge and technology transfer, supporting entrepreneurship, fostering the creation of spin-off companies, and expanding collaboration with industry and the labour market, NTUA seeks to transform the knowledge generated within the University into innovative technological applications and new productive activities. Particular importance is also attached to sustainable development and environmental responsibility. NTUA integrates the principles of sustainability into the University’s operations, infrastructure, educational processes, and research activities, actively contributing to addressing contemporary environmental challenges and aligning its actions with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Furthermore, the University’s Strategic Plan places particular emphasis on skills development for teaching staff and researchers, as well as for students, fostering independent access to knowledge, synthesis, and research, while also developing competencies in communication, collaboration, and the management of projects and teams. Through this process, NTUA seeks to cultivate well-rounded scientific professionals who possess not only a high level of scientific and technological knowledge, but also a strong sense of social awareness and responsibility as active citizens. |
NTUA’s strategy is structured around seven key pillars, encompassing the full range of the University’s activities and translated into specific strategic objectives, actions, and performance indicators. This multidimensional approach reflects the complexity of the mission of a modern university, which is simultaneously called upon to generate new knowledge, educate highly qualified scientists and engineers, contribute to economic and social development, and operate as an institution accountable to society.
Finally, NTUA’s Strategic Plan is not merely a general framework of strategic directions, but a comprehensive strategic management tool. Through the clear alignment of strategic objectives, actions, and performance indicators, it enables the systematic monitoring of progress, the evaluation of outcomes, and the adjustment of the University’s strategy where necessary.
Through the implementation of this Strategic Plan, the National Technical University of Athens seeks to further strengthen its role as an internationally competitive research university of technology, actively contributing to scientific advancement, technological innovation, and the sustainable development of Greek society and the international community.
